About The Attraction
Literally meaning “Solitary Monastery”, the Enchey Monastery was established in 1909 above Gangtok. It belongs to the Nyingma order of Esoteric Buddhism. The religious significance of the monastery lies in the deep seated belief that the protecting deities of Khangchendzonga and Yabdean reside in this monastery. According to another a legend, this monastery is present in a location that was blessed by Lama Drupthob Karpo – an expert in a tantric art of Buddhism with flying powers and that he set a small monastery in the place, having come flying from the Maenam Hill in South Sikkim. Topped by a shining Golden Cupola, the monastery houses a number of scriptures, images of Gods, Goddesses and masks for ritual dances. The gompa is beautifully constructed and has many attractive images of the deities inside. The main deities worshiped here are the Loki Sharia, Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava. The gompa also includes an array of masks used for the annual religious dances and a library. The monastery celebrates a few important festivals every year. Some of them include the Detor Cham/Cham dance festival, the Singhe Chaam and the Pang Lhabsol. A splendid view of the imposing mountains coupled with a place of worship filled with heritage and culture, makes for a wondrous visit.
