If you are looking forward to sightseeing in Sikkim and confused about what to see in Sikkim, start your trip from Rumtek Monastery in Gangtok. This picturesque monastery depicts typical Buddhist architectural style and impresses the first timers magnetically. The monastery is also known as the Dharma Chakra Centre and claimed to be one of the largest monasteries in Sikkim. The most impressive element of this shrine is the Golden Stupa that contains relics of the sixteenth Karmapa. Other than the main temple, the monastery complex encloses monk quarters, a monastic college, nunnery and several related accommodations. However, monasteries like old Sanga-Choeling monastey (only accessible on foot from Pelling), Pemyangtse (near Pelling in West Sikkim), the Enchey monastery (in Gangtok), Karma Kagyu monastery (in Phodong in North Sikkim) also are popular tourist attractions in Sikkim. The Rumtek Monastery is one of the largest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim, perched on top of a hill 23 km from Gangtok. Originally called as the Dharma Chakra Centre, it belongs to the Kargyu sect of Buddhists who originated in Tibet in the 12th century. The monastery is surrounded by verdant green mountains and thus serves as a visual treat besides being a focal point for spiritual solace. Besides this, the architecture of the monastery is one of the finest in the world. The Rumtek Monastery houses a beautiful shrine temple and a monastery for the monks which were established with the aim of spreading the Buddhist teachings around the world. The monastery has a walkway around it on which the monks, pilgrims and visitors perform kora which is basically a circuit round of the monastery. The splendid Rumtek monastery has preserved a golden stupa various other sculptures which belonged to the 16th Karmapa. It also serves as the storehouse for many uniques objects besides storing some of the world's unique religious scriptures. The massive prayer hall inside the monastery is a place worth seeing that is decorated with splendid murals, statues and 'tangkhas'.
