Ski resorts in Norway are generally smaller and lower than those in the main European ski destinations like Austria, France Switzerland or Italy. Norwegian resorts can get oodles of snow though. Norway's snowiest ski resort, Roldal, gets around 11m of snow every year - enough for a snorkel to be required on occasions! Classic ski resorts in the Telemark region near Rauland and at the winter Olympic host town of Lillehammer, with ski resorts like Hafjell, are worth a look too. One can even ski in summer on a glacier at the quirky Stryn.
The real reason to ski or snowboard Norway is for the once in a lifetime experiences. Lodge or boat based skiing from mountain summits down into the fjords of the Lyngen Alps near Tromso, 'Mush and Ski' tours with sled dogs, or perhaps a ski tour in polar bear country on Svalbard. Norway is a true adventure ski and snowboard destination.
As summer sets most of the ski resorts in Norway close down after a long winter season, but - some opens up. Such as Stryn Sommerski, Folgefonna Summer Ski Center and Sognefjellet summer ski centre.
Folgefonna Glacier in Hardanger and the Tystigen Glacier in Stryn is two of Norway's fineste summer ski resorts. Skiers and snowboarders from all over Europe come here to practice their skills in warm weather.
Except great terrain parks, soft snow and, if you are lucky, the rare combination of skiing in the day and refreshing swim in the nearby fjords and lakes in the afternoon.
