About The Attraction

Ram Jhula is an iron suspension bridge across the river Ganges, located 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) north-east from the town Rishikesh in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The bridge connects the Sivananda Nagar area of Muni Ki Reti in Tehri Garhwal district to Swargashram in Pauri Garhwal district crossing the river from west to east. Built in the year 1986, the bridge is one of the iconic landmarks of Rishikesh.

There are many Hindu ashrams and religious centers established at both sides of the Ganges. It is also a connecting bridge between Sivananda Ashram located in Muni Ki Reti to Gita Bhawan, Parmarth Niketan and other temples located in Swargashram. Though similar in design, this bridge is bigger than Lakshman Jhula which is 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) upwards the river stream. This bridge is constructed with the span of 750 feet (230 m).

Positioned in Muni Ki Reti, Ram Jhula is one of the most popular attractions of Rishikesh. This bridge was constructed later than the Laxman Jhula, in the year 1980. Both these bridges are quite similar in design and steel construction. Ram Jhula is placed a few miles downstream from Laxman Jhula and links Swarg Ashram on the western bank of River Ganga to the Sivananda Ashram on the eastern one.

As you walk on the bridge, river Ganga gushes below with full force and you are surrounded by beautiful Himalayas. Let the cool breeze brush past your face. The bride is around 6 km northwards of the holy town. The bridge is also slightly bigger in length than Laxman Jhula. The total length of the bridge is 450 feet.

On both the sides of the bridge are various temples as well as Ashram. There are markets too, selling incense books, books on religious and spiritual topics, idols of gods and goddess, key rings and other knick-knacks. Do not forget to capture the beautiful scenery in your cameras. Savoring local sweet delicacies is also a must.

Stand at the center of the Ram Jhula and hold on tight to the railing as the whole bridge sways in the wind. Join the crowds as they potter between market stalls and sit back and unwind beside the sacred waters of the Ganges.

Although built later than the Lakshman Jhula, in 1980, this bridge is extremely similar both in its steel construction and design. Positioned a couple of miles downstream of Lakshman, the Ram Jhula connects the district of Sivananda Ashram on the eastern bank with Swarg Ashram to the west.

Stroll across the bridge and take in the scenery from this superb vantage point. Watch the fast water as it winds its way through the valley and see boats and rafters pass by beneath you. When the water is not moving too violently you will notice children splashing around and swimming in the shallows. Be sure to come on a breezy day when you can enjoy the bizarre sensation of the whole bridge swaying and shaking beneath your feet.

If this has made your knees feel a bit weak grab a seat and relax at one of the cafés on the banks of the river. Indulge in a refreshing drink and watch as locals and visitors bustle their way across the narrow bridge.
While you are in the area take the opportunity to explore the markets that are set up close to the bridge. Try traditional food and peruse precious stones, clothing and exquisite handmade jewelry.

Ram Jhula is located near Muni Ki Reti, approximately 4 miles (6 kilometers) north of Rishikesh. The bridge is mainly used by pedestrians; however, it is also open to motorbikes and is popular with the local monkeys.
